Sunny Zia - Community-Focused California Port Manager and Engineer

About Sunny Zia

With a leadership background spanning engineering, infrastructure, and construction, Sunny Zia has served as Project and Contract Compliance Manager with the Port of Long Beach since 2008. Engaging with stakeholders in the private and public sector, Sunny Zia oversees a wide range of development and redevelopment initiatives, as well as environmental remediation undertakings. Projects she has coordinated include the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility program, Pier G Wharf Improvement and Double Track Access from Pier G to J projects, and the Pier B Oil Field Relocation Project.

Ms. Zia is also in her second term as elected Long Beach Community College District board member. As a first-generation Iranian American, the importance of hard work and education in achieving the American Dream have been paramount in her life. She holds a BS in civil engineering from the University of Tehran, as well as an MS in the same area with an emphasis in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Irvine.

In her trustee role with the district, Ms. Zia has implemented measures in high skill workforce training, community and industry partnerships, and support for students facing housing and food insecurity. She has also implemented public and private partnerships designed to improve career prospects of students including formerly incarcerated youth. Over the years, Sunny Zia has worked extensively in resolving issues related to bullying and hate crimes.
